"988 is a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress."

Here on #Team211, we love a good puzzle. I often think of the 211 network as a team of detectives or treasure hunters, combing through the map to find a route to connect individuals to relevant community resources. But, like One-Eyed Willy’s map in The Goonies, the treasure map of social services in the United States is difficult to navigate, full of holes and potential missteps.

Today we celebrate finding another path, fitting in another piece of the puzzle, and making the map one step easier to navigate, thanks to the creation of our newest three-digit dialing code, 988.

988 is a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.

In past years, around one in four 211s have reported answering calls for the National Suicide Prevention Lifelines or their state or local suicide prevention lifelines. With the rollout of 988, 211s across the country are stepping up to receive calls, share resources, and provide insights related to this critical service.

211 was created to be a way for individuals to get help, we know the importance of a warm voice and professional guidance, and we’re excited to welcome 988 to the family.
